Glossary of Terms

Air Porosity: the measurement of the volume of pore space in a medium; the greater the air porosity the greater the ability for air to flow through

Anti-bacterial: tending to prevent the growth or spread of bacteria

Biodegradable: capable of being decomposed naturally over time

Durability: the ability to withstand wear, pressure or damage

Fast Fashion: the practice of replicating fashion trends and high fashion designs, using mass production and low cost materials to bring to the retail market while demand is high; usually denotes lower quality products that are often discarded in the landfill after just a few wears

Flax: the plant that provides the raw material for the production of linen; stems of the flax plant are harvested after about 100 days of growing and then fibers are separated from leaves and seeds, inner usable fibers from broken stems are then combed, spun onto a spinning frame, reeled onto bobbins, dried and then dyed (where color is desired) and treated

Hypoallergenic: causes few, if any, allergic reactions

OEKO-TEX: an independent certification confirming safety of linen used for consumer products, indicating no toxic substances present in the material

Sustainability: avoidance of the depletion of natural resources in order to maintain an ecological balance

Thermoregulating: the ability to cool the body when it is warm and warm the body when cool.
